Mapping the Ponzi epidemic: Help us track the cases by Mary Spicuzza
It seems 2009 may down in history as the Year of the Ponzi scheme.
Of course, there have been the headline-grabbing cases involving Bernie Madoff (arrested in late 2008) and R. Allen Stanford. But Ponzimania has also involved dozens of "mini-Madoffs," who collectively managed to make off with billions of dollars.
From the United Kingdom to California, New York to South Africa, it's clear countless assets have been lost around the globe. This map tracks the various schemes, shady operations, and alleged frauds from the last year -- as well as asset recovery efforts. It's a work in progress, so please let us know what we're missing so we can add it to our Ponzi map.
